WEIRD - WiMax Extensions to Isolated Research Networks

WEIRD was an FP6 Integrated Project aiming at implementing research test-beds using the WiMAX technology in isolated or impervious areas. The project aimed to play a prime role in contributing to the standardization of WiMAX integration into next generation networks, by building field test-beds, connected through GEANT2, for three application scenarios: monitoring of volcanic and seismic activities, the fire prevention and telemedicine. The main objectives of WEIRD were: Enhancements to the WiMAX technology; Enhancements to the IP network Control Plane; Supporting studies and deployment recommendations; Assessment of scenarios; Validation of Applications. This presentation will address the main challenges of the WEIRD project, the architecture developed as well as the main achievements.
